UNESCO SYMPOSIUM ON THE CULTURAL INTERACTIONS RESULTING FROM THE SLAVE TRADE AND SLAVERY IN THE ARAB-ISLAMIC WORLD

 

This research is based on nineteenth century British census returns and accounts from the British anti-slavery campaign in the Indian Ocean offers a unique view of African resistance to slavery and the often forgotten contribution of Africans and Moslems to the Royal Navy. The research paper entitled Black Liberators: The Role of Africans & Arabs sailors in the Royal. Navy within the Indian Ocean 1841-1941 was presented at the UNESCO symposium in Rabat, Morocco in May 2007.

THE PORTCITIES PROJECT

 

The Portcities Project was funded by the New Opportunities Fund (NOF). The research for the London community component on the Bengali, Chinese, Goan, Portuguese, Somali and Swahili communities was conducted by Cliff Pereira. Research, collation, image collection and editing was conducted between 2002 and 2004 at the National Maritime Museum (NMM) Greenwich, London.
