CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS
THE EARLY LUSO-
A project seeking to uncover the first culture contact between Asians and Europeans that occurred in the Atlantic Ocean between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Preliminary fieldwork has been conducted in England, Portugal, the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores. Presented at the Asia Pacific Regional Conference on underwater cultural heritage at Manila, Philippines in November 2011. This project is now being extended to Northeast Brazil with the commencement of fieldwork in the state of Bahia in January 2012.
MEMORY OF FASHION
Exploring the transfer of textile technology and fashion within the Portuguese Empire
in the Africa, with particular emphasis on slavery. Fieldwork has already been conducted
in Santiago and Fogo Islands (Cape Verde), Bahia (Brazil), Lamu and Mombasa (Kenya).
A presentation was made to the Victoria & Albert Museum. London, United Kingdom in 2008. (See talks)
